A Big Blow To Orffyreus

Frank Edward says that Orffyreus began to quarrel with Karl. But we know that Orffyreus never said or did any thing derogatory to Karl’s high position, therefore, if count Karl withdrew, it was probably due to his old age and personal problems. On 23rd March 1730, the Landgrave of Hesse-Kassel, Count Karl, died at age 76. After the sad event, really no body in Royal family paid any attention to Orffyreus invention.

Successors were then busy in delivering justice to his quarrelsome former mistresses.  Landgrave Karl had spent lavishly on ladies. Record shows that he spent more than 100,000 Thalers on the ladies, although paid in smaller sums. So it raises the question, if he had the money, why he did not buy the rights to the production of Orffyreus’ machine?  Had he done so, course of the world would have been different today!

Elden E.Park remarks*:

“To me it seems amazing that Karl did not pay the price since he had the money and he knew by his actual observation within the covering (see Collins’ pp. 20, 89-90, 101, 111, 158) that it was an actual invention without any fraud.  The world might have been much different if it could have had the Orffyrean roller bearing sooner and Bessler had been allowed (using money from the sale of his invention) to establish his Fortress of God Christian school (see Collins’ pp. 44, 99, 191) to teach the crafts and sciences including mathematics and mechanics.”

Count Karl’s death was a big blow to Orffyreus. His dreams were almost shattered as he lost everything - his patron, Count Karl, his buyers, his position, and reputation.  He felt and found himself in a world that was degenerating into a mob mentality, ruled by envy and revenge and led by charlatans and it was probably too late for him to stop it.  Nobody really cared for him.  Those distinguished members; all they cared about was their personal fiefdoms.  Orffyreus’ scientific ambitions had been totally destroyed. Orffyreus who fought with courage remained unsuccessful in the end because he was perverse and failed to induce others to give cooperation. As a result of sad experiences, Orffyreus had grown up angry and defiant; an interrogator eager to prove to the world that he was a brilliant achiever who could master perpetual motion but his voice eventually went unheard. Rest of his life Orffyreus lived in despair and frustration.   No great achievement is possible without active support from others.  In this regard, perpetual motionists, in all times, have lacked the necessary art of inducing active cooperation.

Orffyreus’ inventive mind was still not at rest. In 1738, he announced three new inventions: A fountain which leaped continuously from still waters; A large musical organ which played by itself; and An 'Orffyrean ship', or special preservation device, that was designed to save lives and goods at sea in the event of shipwreck. All of these devices were based on perpetual motion but Orffyreus was then trying to sell his invention under new guises because wheel had already brought him lot of notoriety .
